Workpackage Brain Interface: Wireless Powering and Communication

Ali Khaleghi

NTNU, Senior Scientist
WP2 leader

Dr. Ali Khaleghi is a senior scientist at the department of electronic systems (IES), the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU), and the Intervention Center (IVS), Oslo University Hospital (OUS). He has carried out several industrial R&D projects and is CO-PI and project leader for Norwegian Research Council (NFR) and EU H2020 projects (WINNOW, CIRCLE, CLIPEUS, GLADIATOR, 5G-HEART…). His research includes antennas and wave propagation, wireless communications, electromagnetic compatibility, measurement techniques, and bio-electromagnetics. He is authored over 100 peer-reviewed journals and conferences and holds nine patents.

Ilangko Balasingham

NTNU, Senior Scientist & Professor
WP2 Researcher

Ilangko Balasingham is Professor of Medical Signal Processing and Communications at the Department of Electronic Systems.

Since 2002, he has been working with the Intervention Center, Oslo University Hospital – Rikshospitalet, Oslo, Norway as a Senior Research Scientist and Founder and Head of the Biomedical Sensor Network Research Group, since 2017 he is Head of Section for Medical ICT R&D at the Intervention Center.

His research interests include medical signal and image processing, wireless biomedical sensor networks for short range sensing, imaging, localization and communication, and multimedia patient record systems.

Aminolah Hasanvand

NTNU, Senior Hardware and Embedded System Architect
WP2 Researcher

Experienced Senior Hardware and Embedded System Architect specializing in in-body implants and skilled in backscatter communication systems design, system integration, test setup design, signal processing, wireless power transfer, and various related software tools. Proven track record in executing multi-disciplinary projects, with significant contributions as an advanced technology integration lead engineer in the development of implantable devices and associated external support hardware and software.

Robin Augustine

Robin received Master’s degree in Electronics (Robotics) from Cochin University of Science and Technology, India, in 2005. He received Doctoral degree in Electronics and Optic Systems from Université Paris Est Marne La Vallée, Paris France 2009. He had been Post-Doctoral researcher at IETR, Rennes, France until 2011. He joined Uppsala University as senior researcher in 2011. He is now Associate Professor in Medical Engineering at Uppsala University. His research field includes wearable antennas, microwave phantoms, dielectric characterization, Bionics, mechatronics, Non-invasive Diagnostics, clinical trials, animal trials, in and on body microwave communication. He has pioneered the Fat – Intra Body Communication technique and has authored or coauthored more than 200 conference and journal articles.

Robin is the founder, chairman and CTO of the Swedish medtech company Probingon AB. He is currently coordinating EU HORIZON 2020 FET-Open B-CRATOS and involved in several other European large-scale projects.

Rossella Gaffoglio

LINKS, Senior Researcher

Rossella is a physicist and senior researcher at the Advanced Computing, Photonics & Electromagnetics area of Fondazione LINKS, in Turin, Italy, since June 2018. Her research activity mainly concerns the numerical modelling and design of antenna systems, numerical methods, and biomedical applications of electromagnetic fields.

Bappaditya Mandal

Uppsala University, Researcher

Bappaditya Mandal is a Researcher at Uppsala University in the Division of Solid-State Electronics, Department of Electrical Engineering. He specializes in electromagnetic and microwave engineering, with a focus on non-invasive microwave sensors and wearable and implantable antennas. Holding a Ph.D. in Electronics and Telecommunication Engineering, he has made significant contributions to microwave communication and biomedical engineering. Dr. Mandal has published over 30 peer-reviewed articles and is involved in projects like the B-CRATOS Wireless Brain-Connect Interface. Additionally, he serves as an associate editor and reviewer for various academic journals in his field.

Marco Controzzi

SSSA, Ass. Professor, CEO of Prensilia
WP4 leader

Marco designs artificial hands since 2006. He received his BSc and MSc in Mechanical Engineering in 2005 and 2008, respectively. In 2013, he received a PhD in Robotics and ICT from the Scuola Superiore Sant’Anna (SSSA), Italy, and since 2014 is Assistant Professor at the Biorobotics Institute. In 2009 he founded a spin-off company commercializing robot hands (Prensilia SRL).

Paolo Viviani

LINKS, Senior Researcher

Paolo is currently senior researcher at the Advanced Computing, Photonics and Electromagnetics research area of LINKS Foundation. He holds a PhD in Computer Science and and Msc in Physics; his main research interest is High-Performance Computing and its intersection with Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence.
In B-Cratos he is leading the development of ML models for neural decoding that will be used to control the robotic prosthesis.

Zhibin Zhang

Uppsala University, Senior Researcher

Zhibin is docent in electronics and group leader of Flexible Electronics and Neuromorphic Engineering (FENE) at Uppsala University, Department of Electrical Engineering, since 2011.
He has published around 110 peer-review journal articles with h-index 26 (google scholar). His research spans from nanomaterials (carbon nanotubes, graphene), printed electronic components, energy devices, electronic skin, neuromorphic circuit and neuromimetic systems.

Letizia Bergamasco

LINKS, Researcher

Letizia received her BSc in Electronics Engineering and her MSc in ICT for Smart Societies from Politecnico di Torino (Italy). She is currently a researcher in LINKS Foundation in the Connected Systems and Cybersecurity research domain. She participates in different research projects at regional and European level, developing software and artificial intelligence solutions for medical and industrial applications. In 2022 she has started a PhD in Computer and Control Engineering, focused on the study of artificial intelligence techniques for the identification of early markers of neurodegenerative diseases.

Paul Wanda

Paul is an experienced biomedical engineer and project manager with several years experience in smart closed-loop record/stim neural interface systems. His primary role is to provide Work Package leadership (WP5, WP7), especially coordinating system integration and exploitation. Prior to his participation in the B-CRATOS consortium, Paul was project manager at the University of Pennsylvania for the DARPA Restoring Active Memory (RAM) project to develop closed-loop stimulation solutions to restore memory function. He is currently employed by Blackrock Microsystems Europe GmbH and resides in Cologne, Germany.

Hansjörg Scherberger

DPZ, Researcher & Head of Neurobiology Lab

Hans Scherberger currently heads the Neurobiology Lab at the German Primate Center and is Professor for Primate Neurobiology at Göttingen University (since 2008). He was trained in systems electrophysiology at the University of Zurich (1995-1998) and at the California Institute of Technology (1998-2003) before leading a research group at the Institute of Neuroinformatics at Zurich University and ETH (2004-2009). His research focuses on neural coding and decoding of hand movements and their interactions with sensory systems.

Andres Agudelo-Toro

DPZ, Neuro-Engineer & Scientist

Andres is a neuro-engineer working as a scientist at the Deutsches PrimatenZentrum. Following his goal to develop a high-accuracy neuro-prosthesis for grasping, he combines neural decoding, virtual environments, and robotics in experiments with primates. To prepare for this, Andres was trained in control systems, real-time distributed systems, and neuroscience at EAFIT (Colombia), Rutgers (USA), and the Max Plack Institute (Germany). He obtained his doctoral degree in Theoretical and Computational Neuroscience from Göttingen University and MPI-DS with his dissertation on theoretical models of brain stimulation.
